The 2005 Heart-to-Heart at Hay Festival

Saturday 4th June 2005

Organic food is natural. GM food is deceptive.

A meeting about the benefits of organic food in a 700 year old Cruck hall followed by an organic lunch in the farm courtyard held at the end of May has been a great formula. The Trust has held five since 1999 and they have been really successful. These meetings have been called Heart-to-Hearts and had a panel of four or five speakers with different perspectives with one aim: to tell the truth about GM food. Over the five years there have been 21 speakers, all leaders in their subject, ranging from Terry Jones through to Michael Mansfield Q.C. on to Patrick Holden and scientists such Dr Richarda Stienbrecher and Dr Michael Antoniou: creative people, legal and scientific minds.

They have been extremely popular to the point now where the Medieval hall at Penrhos cannot hold the numbers. The Heart-to-Heart 2005 was held at Hay-on-Wye, as one of the Hay Festival events, on Saturday 4th June.

The panel for this year was Member of Parliament and outspoken supporter of environmental issues Michael Meacher MP. Jeffrey Smith founder of the Institute for Responsible Technology Iowa. USA and author of Seeds of Deception; exposing corporate and government lies about the safety of GM food. Dr Michael Antoniou, molecular genetics research scientist at Kings College London and Peter Melchett. Policy director of the Soil Association.

The speakers explained why GM can never be the right answer to world nutrition and why organic food will provide the answer.

Further event details will be added soon.
